Thank you

This was on my desk when I arrived in class this week. It was from a student who sits in the first row. Always in the first row. A woman who calls me "teacher".

Why is it so hard to say thank you? Not "thank you", like you say when someone holds the door open for you at the post office. Or "thank you" for passing me the butter.

But "thank you", for showing up every day. For being honest and open and willing to be present. For sharing who you are with who I am. For taking the time to connect on a day when I really needed you.

A handwritten note. A warm smile. A brightly colored lollipop that greets you before you even sit down. Something that makes you feel good, no matter what side you're on.

Something that says, "thank you" for teaching me what it means to be human.
