A Goodbye to Tom Terrific and an Invitation

September 3, 2020 Suzanne Maggio-Hucek

Yesterday, we lost one of my childhood heroes. Tom Seaver, the star right hander of my childhood team, the New York Mets, passed away at his home in Calistoga, CA at the age of 75. According to reports, he succumbed to Lewy Body Dementia, the second most common form of degenerative dementia, and complications from COVID-19. Another mainstay of my childhood gone too soon.

In The Cardinal Club I wrote about my memories of that magical year, in 1969, when the New York Mets came from the basement to win it all, in no small part due to the magic of Tom Terrific, their star right hander. Baseball, for me, has always served as a way to mark time. From spring to summer to fall, the love of the game has always remained a constant in my life. Even in such unusual times as these.

I wanted to invite you to a couple of online presentations coming up. I have been invited to speak remotely at the Somerset County and Chester Libraries in my home state of New Jersey. I’d be thrilled if you could join us. On Monday, September 14th at 7:00 p.m. EST, I’ll be a guest of the Somerset County Library. The event is free and you can register here. Then, on Tuesday, October 13th, I’ll be speaking remotely at the Chester Library at 4:00 p.m. EST. This event is also free. You can register here.

Last month I was pleased to receive a wonderful review from author, activist and public speaker, Patti Digh. Patti found The Cardinal Club “one of the most satisfying books I’ve read this year… an honest, unflinching book that invites us into a family and a life we begin to care deeply about as we read.” You can read the full review here.

As the pandemic drags on, I’m looking for new and creative ways to share The Cardinal Club with readers even while I’m hard at work on my next book, a story about lessons learned while walking The Camino de Santiago. I’m excited for the upcoming virtual presentations, even though it’s not the in person book events I had planned, but I’m excited to have this opportunity to share The Cardinal Club with new readers. I hope you’ll consider joining in.
